When you say biggest, being the most efficient and scalable should also be a part of the factors considered in the data center’s design and implementation process. Having built one of the India’s largest data centers and studied the biggest data centers in the world, we at Prasa Infocom, have learned some critical lessons that we’ve shared through this post.

I’ve compiled the valuable lessons our facility operators learned in the form of the pointers given below:

1. Plan Well in Advance

As a data center manager, you need to make sure that you have a data center strategy in place with a proper planning regarding the capacity, requirements, and potential of the data center you’re going to be implementing. And for bigger data centers, make sure you plan well in advance and also do the resource planning to meet the current and future needs of your business and its operations.

2. Measure and Control

Controlling the energy usage, power usage, cutting down the operation costs, and reducing the maintenance needs are possible only when you start measuring it. How you calculate and integrate your equipment into the racks, racks into the data center, data center into the facility, and facility into the organization space is the key here.

3. Cooling Efficiency is Vital

We all know that investing in a good cooling infrastructure is important, but most of the times we neglect to choose the right cooling method. And in case of larger data centers, precision cooling is a highly critical issue. Considering the fact that liquid pipes require less space and energy than those with air for transporting the same amount of heat energy, it is advisable that you prefer liquid cooling over air cooling to improve the cooling efficiency in bigger data center projects.

4. Minimize Conversion Losses

Minimizing conversion losses of data centers is as important as minimizing their downtimes. To minimize conversion losses, you need to first conduct an extensive energy audit of your data center, choose high-efficiency UPSs and PDUs, and sticking to the data center building best practices.

5. Monitor and Modify

Monitoring the process from the very beginning, spotting loopholes, and modifying the design and other plans is crucial to the success of data centers, especially the larger ones. With a proper monitoring and reporting process, you should be able to effectively identify the underutilized equipment and stranded IT capacity. This will help you optimize the power and space even further.

Now that you’ve learned your lessons well, go ahead and start building your data center already. No matter how big or small your data center is, make sure it is energy efficient, cost-effective and needs comparatively less maintenance.
